Tax, Title and License (TTL) Calculator for a Car
Estimate the tax and government fees added to a vehicle purchase without pretending every state uses the same tax base. Enter the current rate and official title/registration amounts for your transaction.
Separate tax from title, registration and license fees.
Use your state or local agency's current rate and fee amounts. For supported states, the dedicated state calculator is more precise.
TTL usually means tax, title and license, but dealer worksheets often use the shorthand for a wider group of government charges. Sales/use tax is calculated from a taxable base; title establishes ownership; registration/license/plate charges authorize the vehicle for road use. They should be audited as separate lines.
Why there is no accurate nationwide TTL percentage
States differ on the tax rate, local tax, trade-in deductions, rebates, private-party valuation rules, taxable dealer fees, title charges, plate transfers and vehicle-specific registration. A single “10% for tax and tags” rule can be materially wrong.
This tool therefore uses the rate and government-fee amounts you enter. If your state is supported below, use the dedicated engine because it applies more of the state's verified rules automatically.
Taxable base comes before the tax rate
Two buyers can face the same tax percentage and still owe different tax because their taxable bases differ. Some states allow a qualifying trade-in allowance to reduce the taxable vehicle amount; California does not. Texas private-party purchases can be tested against Standard Presumptive Value. Georgia generally uses TAVT rather than ordinary vehicle sales tax. Those differences are why the “trade reduces tax” option is off by default.
Title, registration, license and plate fees
Government fees can be fixed, vehicle-specific or location-specific. A plate transfer can cost differently from a new plate, and weight, value, county, EV status or local transportation assessments can change registration. Use the current state motor-vehicle agency estimate instead of copying an old fee from a forum or previous purchase.
Dealer fees are not automatically TTL
Documentation, processing, reconditioning, protection products and accessories are dealer-controlled or optional charges, not government title or registration fees. Some states tax particular dealer charges, which is why this calculator has a separate taxable dealer-fee field.
Detailed state calculators
Questions to answer before trusting a TTL estimate
- Which state and local jurisdiction controls the tax?
- Does a qualifying trade reduce the taxable base?
- Are dealer documentation/add-on charges taxable?
- Is this a new plate, transfer or initial registration?
- Do vehicle weight, value, EV status or county change registration?
- Are all government charges separately identified on the buyer's order?
The calculator is an educational reconciliation tool. State revenue and motor-vehicle agencies determine the final tax, title and registration amount.
