Trade-In vs Private Sale Calculator
A private buyer may pay more, while a qualifying dealer trade can create tax savings and a simpler payoff/title process. Compare the dollars you actually keep after tax effects, payoff and selling costs.
Compare what you actually keep.
Do not compare a dealer's $15,000 trade allowance directly with a $17,000 private-sale asking price. Compare net proceeds after payoff and selling costs, then add any qualifying tax benefit the dealer trade creates.
Dealer trade effective value
The dealer path combines the gross trade allowance with any qualifying tax saving. The lender payoff then determines how much positive equity remains—or how much negative equity must be paid or rolled into the new loan.
Private sale effective value
Start with the realistic sale price, subtract payoff and expected selling costs such as inspection, detailing, advertising, title/lien logistics or payment-processing costs. Do not use an optimistic listing price if comparable vehicles actually sell for less.
Example: when a $2,000 higher private offer barely wins
Suppose a dealer offers $15,000 for the trade, a private buyer offers $17,000, and the dealer trade creates $900 of tax savings. If private-sale costs are $500, the private path's apparent $2,000 advantage falls to $600 before considering time, title/payment risk or the convenience of one transaction. That is the comparison this tool is designed to expose.
Loan payoff affects both options
If the payoff is $18,000, both options begin with negative equity. The private sale does not make the lender balance disappear; you normally need a plan to satisfy the lien so clean title can transfer. The dealer can often handle payoff as part of the replacement transaction, but rolled debt makes the new loan more expensive.
Do not double-count the tax saving
The trade-in tax benefit belongs only on the dealer-trade side when the state and transaction qualify. Do not also subtract the trade allowance from the private-sale tax calculation unless the state expressly permits the structure you are using.
