Washington Vehicle Sales Tax Calculator
See regular sales tax, the additional motor-vehicle tax and luxury tax as separate amounts rather than one combined dealer figure.
Start with the deal price.
Use the negotiated selling price, not the monthly payment.
Regular sales-tax rate
Washington's regular rate varies by location. Enter the current combined location rate shown by the official lookup or dealer documentation.
Additional motor-vehicle tax
For a 2026 purchase, the engine separately applies the 0.5% additional motor-vehicle sales/use tax.
Luxury motor-vehicle tax
The calculator uses the purchase date. The luxury-tax deduction was $100,000 through June 30, 2026 and increased to $102,000 on July 1, 2026 under the statutory 2% annual adjustment; the 8% luxury tax applies only above the deduction.
Washington vehicle tax can combine the location-based retail sales/use tax rate with an additional 0.5% motor-vehicle tax. A separate 8% luxury motor vehicle tax can apply above the current statutory deduction; that deduction rises 2% each July 1 and is $102,000 for July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027.

Why Washington needs a location input
Washington's retail sales/use tax rate varies by location, so a statewide-only percentage is not enough for an exact buyer estimate. Use the Department of Revenue location lookup for the registration or transaction location that controls the tax result, then enter that rate in the calculator.
The additional motor-vehicle sales/use tax is a separate 0.5% component effective January 1, 2026. Keeping it separate makes the result easier to audit when a dealer worksheet shows multiple tax lines.
The luxury vehicle tax is a marginal tax
The 8% luxury motor vehicle tax is not 8% of the entire vehicle price. It applies to the taxable amount above the statutory deduction. The deduction began at $100,000 and is increased by 2% each July 1, making it $102,000 beginning July 1, 2026.
Transaction type and statutory exemptions can matter, so use the current Washington DOR luxury-tax guidance for a vehicle near the threshold or for a lease, motor home, tribal or nonresident transaction.
Licensing costs can be more variable than the tax formula
Registration can include weight, local/RTA, plate, EV or other charges depending on vehicle and address. CarDealAudit therefore exposes an input for location- and vehicle-specific licensing amounts instead of pretending there is one statewide registration total.
For quote comparison, separate dealer document/service fees from government licensing charges and check the dealer fee against Washington's current dealer guidance.
$110,000 vehicle after July 1, 2026
Ignoring exemptions and assuming $110,000 is the amount to which the luxury threshold applies, the amount above the $102,000 deduction is $8,000. The 8% luxury component on that excess is $640. The normal location-based sales/use tax, the separate 0.5% motor-vehicle tax and licensing charges are additional components.
Washington vehicle tax calculator FAQs
What is Washington's extra motor-vehicle tax in 2026?
Washington DOR states that the additional motor-vehicle sales/use tax rate is 0.5% effective January 1, 2026.
Is the Washington luxury vehicle tax 8% of the whole price?
No. It is an additional 8% on the amount above the applicable statutory deduction, subject to the current rules and exemptions.
Why can't this calculator automatically know my exact Washington registration fee?
Local/RTA, weight, vehicle type and other licensing factors can change the amount. The calculator leaves those inputs visible so you can use the current DOL estimate.
The calculator distinguishes fixed statewide rules from local, vehicle-specific or user-entered amounts. Dealer worksheets and the state motor-vehicle agency remain the final transaction records. Review the official source registry.
