Start with the deal price.

Use the negotiated selling price, not the monthly payment.

Florida uses two tax layers

The calculator shows the 6% state portion and the county discretionary surtax separately. For a motor vehicle, the county portion is generally limited to the first $5,000 of the taxable amount.

Which county rate is used?

Select the county associated with the transaction's applicable Florida surtax location. The tool displays the loaded 2026 rate so the assumption is visible.

Rebates and discounts

Dealer discounts and genuine price reductions are separated from cash rebates because the labels can receive different tax treatment. Confirm the dealer's taxable-base calculation when an incentive is involved.

Florida car tax and OTD: quick answer

For a standard Florida vehicle purchase, start with the negotiated taxable amount, apply the 6% state sales tax, then apply the registration county's discretionary surtax to no more than the first $5,000 of the amount subject to surtax. Add title, registration, plate and any applicable $225 initial-registration charge separately.

What the Florida calculator includes

  • Registration county
  • Negotiated selling price
  • Gross trade allowance
  • Trade payoff kept separate
  • Dealer fees and add-ons
  • Plate transfer or new plate
  • Whether initial registration applies

What changes the Florida car-tax estimate

The selling price alone is not enough. A qualifying trade allowance can reduce the taxable purchase amount, while dealer-controlled taxable charges can increase it. County surtax is a separate layer from the 6% state rate, so the buyer's registration county matters.

The calculator keeps these inputs visible instead of multiplying the advertised price by one blended percentage. That makes it easier to compare the estimate with the tax line on a buyer's order.

Florida tax, tag and title are different charges

Sales tax and county surtax are transaction taxes. Title, registration and plate charges are motor-vehicle agency fees. A buyer who already has a qualifying Florida plate transfer can face a different registration total from a buyer establishing an initial Florida registration.

Treat dealer documentation, electronic filing, protection products and accessories as separate lines. A dealer-created fee should not be relabeled as a government title or registration charge merely because it appears near DMV fees on the worksheet.

How to verify a Florida dealer quote

Ask for a written out-the-door price showing selling price, discounts, trade allowance, payoff, taxable dealer charges, state tax, county surtax and government fees. Confirm the county surtax rate with the Florida Department of Revenue and vehicle-specific title/registration amounts with FLHSMV when precision matters.

If the dealer's tax result differs from this estimate, compare the taxable base first. A difference in trade treatment, taxable fees or the county selected often explains more than the tax rate itself.

Worked Florida example

$30,000 vehicle with a $10,000 qualifying trade

If the taxable amount after a qualifying trade is $20,000, Florida's 6% state component is $1,200. If the applicable county surtax is 1%, that surtax applies to no more than the first $5,000 of the taxable amount, producing $50 in this simplified example. Title, registration, plate, dealer fees and any applicable initial-registration charge are added separately.

Florida vehicle tax calculator FAQs

Is Florida car sales tax always 6%?

The statewide sales-tax component is 6%, but many transactions also have a county discretionary surtax. Title, registration, plate and dealer charges are separate from that rate.

Does Florida county surtax apply to the whole car price?

For the motor-vehicle calculation modeled here, the discretionary surtax is limited to the first $5,000 of the amount subject to surtax. Confirm the current county rate with Florida DOR.

Why does a Florida OTD quote differ from a simple tax calculator?

An OTD quote can include taxable dealer fees, add-ons, title, registration, plate costs, trade treatment and an initial-registration fee. A price-times-tax calculation misses those lines.

Source and method note

The calculator distinguishes fixed statewide rules from local, vehicle-specific or user-entered amounts. Dealer worksheets and the state motor-vehicle agency remain the final transaction records. Review the official source registry.
